A community development organisation based in Hyderabad, India, that works towards the rights of children on the streets through a systematic process of empowerment.
Ascodimaya
A human rights organisation which represents indigenous Mayans and is part of a larger organisation for Central and South American Mayans, who are fighting for lands rights and equality. They are in touch with over 350 families in Guatemala and they help the most marginalised children get an education and to go to universities, they also help educate Mayan people on human and women’s rights.
El Unica Escuela Publica
Unica Escuela Publica is a school in the centre of the town of San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala, situated next to the local market which is over 300 years old. The school functions as a cultural centre and a meeting point for local people as well as serving basic education to over 390 children who attend the school.
Flor de Maiz
Flor de Maiz runs a Spanish School in San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala, and owns a large ecological garden. They have grown 2000 tree seedlings for the reforestation of the Atitalan area, which is vulnerable to logging and subsequent mudslides.
Save The Trees International
African Conservation NGO, campaigning against environmental degradation in Zimbabwe and across Africa. As well as actively encouraging reforestation, Save the Trees also aims to educate people about sustainable forest management and good agro-ecological practices for sustainable land use. Down2Earth is working to raise the profile of Save the Trees and provides them with a free webspace to promote their work.
Taa Pit Kortess
The Mayan Cultural Centre of San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala, a centre with a public internet facility. The directors of the centre, Juan Manual Chavajay and Jaun Martin Gonzalez, provide basic education for the the Mayan community, for both adults and children. They teach Tsutujil, English, Mayan philosophy and IT Skills.
