India - what you will be doing
Week 1:
• Acclimatise to life in Hyderabad and get to know the city and culture
• Meet the local staff and spend time with the children in the drop in centre
• Take part in workshops which will cover the basics of child rights and prepare you for the outreach work
• Learn some rudimentary Telugu and Hindi
Following weeks:
• Join the outreach team on the railway platforms and streets of Hyderabad to identify and counsel children
• Spend time with the Peer Educators to improve their English, interpersonal and I.T skills
• Assist local staff in documentation such as compiling reports, case studies and promotional material
• Take part in activities such as art workshops and sports at the shelter to create a more child-friendly environment
o Organise entertainment events with the children to nurture their inbuilt talent and sense of self worth
• Liase with officials and other NGOs to generate further affiliations, with the aim of creating strong community ownership of the project and building a database of educational and vocational opportunities for children
• Take part in a Home Placement Camp
• Volunteers can opt to spend time in a school for children with learning difficulties, joining in with classes or helping with practical tasks such as cooking and caring for the children with more severe disabilities. This work is especially suited to volunteers with a background in physiotherapy.
• Depending on the time of year, volunteers may spend two weeks visiting shelters in neighbouring towns as part of our research on how child rights are being implemented there.
* Please note that your participation is subject to your input and personal interests, as well as the length of time that you are volunteering with us. If there is something else in particular that you would like to be involved in whilst on a project, or you have more specialist skills that you would like to share, please talk to us and we will find a way to fit this in.
