Almost 50% of the Guatemalan population belongs to over 25 different linguistic groups, mostly living in rural areas. Most of these people live below the absolute poverty line. The main source of income for small farmers is coffee.

Child labour is common in Guatemala, and supporting education can help reduce child labour. Many children do not go to school, or they will go to school in the monring and work in the afternoon. Poor school attendance and performance can be linked to malnutrition, infections and other diseases, as well as lack of future opportunities and illiteracy.

Computer and IT training is becoming more important for people in Guatemala, as it is necessary to be able to use new information and communication technologies for educational purposes as well as for small and medium enterprises. However, not many schools have computers, especially in rural areas.
