14-21 August 2007 - CLIMATE CHANGE CAMP

This year's climate change camp took off at a site near Heathrow on the 14-21 August. The camp consisted of 8 days of low-impact living, debates, music, workshops and demos, and dealt with the root of the causes of climate change.

Climate change is a warning sign of a problem facing our species, which also comprises of the build-up of waste products and the exhaustion of local resources. The Earth is always changing. However, current changes in the environment are human-produced and are affecting all species; humans, other animals and plants.

Global warming is caused by the effects of ultraviolet radiation following the thinning of the ozone layer around the Earth, caused by an increase in carbon dioxide (CO2). Of all the CO2 emissions from fossil fuels since the start of industrial revolution, around half have been made in the last 20 years. If this continues it would create a minimum average of global temperature rise of 3°C, which is enough to slow the Gulf Stream and flood the world’s coastal cities, as well as causing further hurricanes. With an increasing rise in temperature most animal and plant species would not be able to adapt and many would disappear.

Some examples of things you can do:

• Turn down the central heating

• Car share
• Use the bus or a train rather than your car or rather than flights
• Buy local and organic
• Recycle and buy second hand clothes and products
• Turn off computers and monitors when you are away from your desk
