BACKGROUND
Between 1993 and early 2006, ASCODIMAYA has been carrying out a wide range of social activities. Among others, the Association has implemented the following activities:
- Capacity-building classes focusing on political training and/or civic participation
- Classes on medicinal plants
- Circumstantial analysis
- Analysis and interpretation of the Mayan Calendar
- Communal cohabitation
- Mayan ceremonies in different sacred places
- Walks in commemoration of the International Women’s Day and the International Workers’ Day (May Day)
- Mass meetings
- Peace Vigils
- Agreements on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights and Identity, the Agreement on the Agrarian Situation and Socioeconomic Aspects, the Political Constitution of the Republic, the Labor Code, the Civil Code, Agreement 169 of the International Labor Organization (ILO)

ASCODIMAYA participated in the fight for the representation of the Mayan People in Guatemala’s National Assembly. The Association takes part in the meetings of the Intersectoral Dialogue Round Table on Indigenous Peoples (PROPAZ), attends the meetings of the National Food Board (MNA), is part of the National Food and Nutrition Security Council (CONASAN), takes part in the Coordinating Committee of Organizations for the Compensation of the Mayan, Xinka, Garifuna and Ladino Peoples, and is a member of the Waq’ib’ Mayan Coordination and Convergence organization, which is in the process of preparing the Third Continental Meeting of Indigenous Peoples taking place at the end of March of 2007.
Political efforts were coordinated with these organizations from 2003 until now. |
